Discharge of Varta lead-acid accumulator battery

We have measured comparison characteristics of Varta lead-acid accumulator (40 A*h, 12 V) at load current about 1 C with the help of a 500 W power test bench. The test results demonstrate evident reduction of polarization component of internal resistance.

Figures 1-3 show experimentally obtained extracted power – relative capacity, specific power – specific energy and relative capacity – load current diagrams. As shown in the diagrams, when the accumulator is discharged through an electronic separator (ES), the extracted energy significantly grows in comparison with accumulator discharge directly to the load (with the same power and load current).

The capacity (in A*h) extracted from the accumulator during its discharge through ES by 1 C current (Fig. 3), increases by more than 17%. ES provides constancy of the extracted power (Fig. 1) during nearly the whole discharge time (till 65% of relative capacity); without ES the power level which is nearly 30% lower, is maintained only till 50% of accumulator relative capacity.

The specific power – specific energy diagram on Fig.2 is the most significant one. With ES the extracted specific energy grows more than half as much even at low power; with power growth this difference achieves 3 – 4 times. It means that the extraction efficiency of energy stored in the accumulator is limited exactly by polarization component of its internal resistance, and with ES this efficiency rises dramatically.
